It has been learnt from a source, privy to the development, that the MNC is in the stage of finalising the location. Once formalised, this project will mean an investment to the tune of Rs 500 crore.
A senior government official, when contacted, remained tight-lipped, citing model code of conduct as the reason. In January this year, when the city played host to the two-day Global Investors’ Meet, many mega projects MoUs were inked that led to the announcement of TN attracting over Rs 3 lakh crore worth of investments.
Several big-ticket investments were in the pipeline awaiting clearance of procedural formalities. At that time, it was reported by this newspaper that TN was in the forefront for Amazon setting up three of its data centres also. When this materialises, an investment exceeding Rs 3,000 crore would boost the state’s kitty, multiple sources had revealed to DTNext.
A senior official cited TN’s advantage over other locations in the country – talent availability and the robust logistics infrastructure – as reasons for the US-based retailer’s investment plan. It is said to be scouting for three land parcels in proximity of 20 miles each with the criteria of being in the city and nearby places.
The latest move of Amazon keen to establish another logistics hub in the city, lends veracity to these salient features. Though in Bengaluru, the e-tailer has a sizeable operation and Chennai leads when it comes to employment, said the source aware of the deal.
