Chithirai festival begins in Thanjavur

The ceremonial flag hoisting signifying the commencement of Chithirai festival was held at Big Temple on Tuesday.

As part of the ceremony, the deities of Chandrasekar and Panchamurthy were taken around the temple. Later, flag mast was abluted and scaffoldings were put in place for that. Following that, the flag was hoisted. Hereditary trustee of Palace Devasthanam Babaji Rajah Bhonsale, Assistant Commissioner of HR and CE department J Bharanidharan, executive officer of Big Temple S Madhavan attended the event.


The festival will go on till April 19 and deities would be taken on procession every day and ‘Chinna Melam’ would also be performed. The Car festival, which recommenced from 2015 after a gap of more than 100 years, would be held on April 16.
