Arappor Iyakkam, a non-governmental organisation, has released a smartphone application containing details of all the candidates competing in the Parliamentary elections in the state.

Apart from basic details about the candidates, details of their educational background, profession, annual income for the last 5 years, assets and liabilities declared and details of criminal cases pending against them were also provided in the application.
“The application is aimed at creating awareness among people of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry about the candidates contesting in their constituency.
Arappor Iyakkam strongly believes that informed citizenry is key to a functional democracy and hence this is an effort to make citizens aware of the choices they have before they go to vote,”Jayaram Venkatesan, convenor of Arappor Iyakkam said.
The ‘Arappor’ application is available on Google Play Store and can be operated on Android platform. The details in the application are based on the information declared by the candidates in their affidavits.
Jayaram added that the details are provided in English and Tamil.
“This application is the outcome of the effort of close to 100 volunteersworking overtime over the last 2 weeks to collect datafrom candidates’ affidavit and present in a simple form. The application will soon be updated with information of candidates contesting in the by-elections for 18 Assembly constituencies as well,” he said.
The NGO also urged the voters to carry out proper research before casting their votes. Apart from candidates’ details, the application also has the details of other activities carried out by the NGO.
