Veeranam Lake is one of the water reservoirs from where water is supplied to Chennai city. The lake has a capacity to store about 1,465 mcft of water.
Veeranam lake gets water from Kollidam via Vadavaru River. Water released from the Mettur dam through Kollidam and Lower Anicut would also bring in sufficient inflow into the Veeranam Lake.
Due to recent failure in monsoon lead to dry bed of the lake thus affecting the water supply to Chennai district.
Meanwhile out of 8,000 cusecs released from Mettur dam on March 30, 1,000-1,300 cusecs is expected to reach the Veeranam tank.
Water released from the Mettur dam will reach the lower Anaicut and then flow into the Vadava channel to finally reach Veeranam. Eventually it was reported that Veeranam lake received 2000 cusecs on April 7.
As per reports, on April 10, the water level in the lake has raised to 46.25 mcft and is said to raise further. Adding further, it is expected that the lake may reach the full storage capacity in four more days.
This will enable undisrupted water supply to the city, in the coming days.
