Talking to reporters at the state party headquarters here, Union Minister Goyal, who is here in connection with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s election rally at Theni and Madurai on Saturday, said, “I do not think NEET should be scrapped. We will talk to the AIADMK and convince them.”

He also said that the AIADMK’s request for NEET in Tamil language was accepted by the Centre and was being implemented.

Goyal mixed no words in slamming AICC chief Rahul Gandhi on his promise that NEET would be abolished in states where they did not want it, and said the Congress perhaps, wanted to re-introduce the old system under which seats were decided by the college management with the payment of exorbitant capitation fee, that could benefit only the rich and the affluent.

He alleged that people of Tamil Nadu wanted medical seats on merit to ensure that those from the poorer sections were benefitted by it.

“But the Congress wanted to remove NEET to deprive the poor access to medical education,” Goyal charged.

The AIADMK has promised, like other Opposition parties, that steps would be taken to abolish the NEET after the state faced an political outrage over the death of Anitha, a medical aspirant.
