The four deceased workers were identified as Anwar Hussain, 26, his brother Dilwar Hussain, 21, Farook Ahmed, 22 and Abibur Rahman, 21. They worked in a dyeing unit owned by Jayakumar from Coimbatore district.

There are about 18 migrant labourers working in the firm ‘Unity Washing’, which is being run by Jayakumar over the last eight years. Though Sunday was a holiday for workers, Jayakumar asked seven workers to come to remove a block in one of the three effluent storage tanks. The tank is about ten feet deep, but only has a small opening for workers to go through.

Police have said that action would be taken against the owner of the dyeing unit in Tirupur district in which four migrant workers from Assam died of asphyxiation on Sunday.
Tirupur RDO Senbagavalli said that it was an offence for the owner to let the workers get into the tank without any safety gear. “Action will be taken against him. Compensation will also be provided to the kin of the deceased workers,” she said. “Soon after getting into the tank, a worker Dilwar swooned and fell into the waste water. In a bid to rescue him, the three others got into the tank and they too collapsed inside,” police said.
On receiving information, the Fire and Rescue Service personnel and Veerapandi police rushed to the spot and brought the four persons out of the tank. They were then rushed to Tirupur Government Hospital. While Dilwar died on the way to the hospital, the three others lost their lives when they did not respond to the treatment at the hospital.
Their bodies were then sent for post-mortem examination. Veerapandi police have registered a case. Police are likely to take action against the firm owner Jayakumar for failing to adhere to safety norms for his workers.
