A senior TASMAC official said that during the last weekend before the wind-down of the campaigning, hard liquor sales touched Rs 130 crore per day. “This Sunday alone the sales crossed Rs 135 crore,” he added. “Soon after the announcement of the closure of liquor shops from Tuesday till Thursday, the liquor sales, especially on Monday, is expected to close at Rs 140 crore,” he said.

The official said that extra salesmen were deployed in several Tasmac outlets where the sales are high. “In addition, the security personnel were also deployed in few Tasmac shops that were identified as sensitive.” the official added.

Despite the ban on bulk sale of liquor for individuals by Excise Department after the Lok Sabha elections were announced, sales across all Tasmac shops in the State increased by more than 10% soon after the election campaign started.
