In an apparent suicide pact made, S Sathish Kumar (30), a farm labourer, and his wife Thavamani (30) decided to take their lives along with that of their three-year-old daughter, Monika.
The incident unfolded when Sathish, a native of Nadupuli in Pollachi, was managing a farm owned by Periasamy from Pongalur by staying there. Sathish reportedly became depressed over mounting debts and often spoke about the issue to his co-workers.
Deciding to end their lives, Sathish and his wife on Thursday jumped into a 11-feet-deep tank, located nearby their residence, that had water to the brim. A local, who noticed the duo jumping into the tank meant for drip irrigation purposes, immediately rushed to gather a few people for help. They soon managed to rescue Thavamani, who was found conscious. However, Sathish Kumar and Monika could not be saved.
Thavamani, who found her husband and child lying dead, wept inconsolably. Even as the villagers tried to console her, she caught them by surprise as she ran into her house and swallowed pesticide in an attempt to again end her life. She then swooned and was rushed to Tirupur Government Hospital, where her condition is considered to be serious.
Upon receiving information, Avinashipalayam police rushed to the spot and sent the bodies of Sathish Kumar and Monika for post-mortem.
A case has been registered and further investigationis on.
