Sources said Natarajan and his wife Devaki were taking care of a four-year-old dog, who they named ‘Puppy’. The couple, who considered the dog part of their family, allotted a chair for Puppy in front of their house and did not chain him during the night hours.

Natarajan used to take the dog for walking in his field every morning. On Saturday, Natarajan and Puppy were on their usual walk when the dog noticed a snake in the field. Sensing danger for his master, Puppy ran to the snake and tried to scare it away. A shocked Natarajan ran back to his house to bring a stick to kill the snake.

Upon coming back, he was shocked to see both Puppy and the snake dead. The farmer, who was moved by his dog’s life-saving gesture, took Puppy to his house and gave him anhonourable burial.
