Placement in IIT-M increases by 15 per cent this year

The placements of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has increased by 15 per cent this year with 964 students getting placed through pre-placement offers in many Indian and international organisations.

The campus placements were conducted in two phases. The Phase I was held from December 1 to 8 last year and the second phase was from the second half of January 2019 to until recently.


As many as 964 students got placed during the campus recruitment for this academic year 2018-19 including 97 students who received Pre-Placement Offers (PPOs). As a result, the institute has shown more than 15 per cent increase with 964 students getting placed as against the mark of 834 students who got placed including PPOs in the last academic year.


One of the major contributors to this increase is said to be because IIT Madras retained number one position in Engineering category for the fourth consecutive time in India Rankings 2019 of the National Institutional Ranking Framework, Ministry of Human Resources Development.


The total number of students registered for placements this year was around 1,300. The number of PPOs has also increased this year as a total of 136 PPOs were received during 2018-19 as against 114 in the preceding year with several offers from large firms such as Microsoft, Qualcomm and Goldman Sachs.


The students received a total of 1,146 offers (including 136 PPOs) from 298 companies that had registered for placements for 2018-19. The total number of offers is an all-time high for IIT Madras and among these, there were 21 international offers.


Overall trends in sector-wise recruitment indicated the same trend as the preceding years, ‘Core’ and ‘Information Technology’ sectors still constituted the leading recruiters. This year also marked the first time that all leading consulting majors were on campus for recruitment added to the return of Google on campus.


The top five recruiters for the year includes Micron with 26 offers, Intel India Technology with 26, Citibank with 23 and Microsoft with 22.


A total of 51 start-ups also participated in the placements this year. They made a total of 121 offers, of which 97 were accepted. The leading sectors in start-up recruitment were IT (21 %) followed by Analytics (16 %).
