1.5K teachers get final chance to clear TET

Over 1,500 government school teachers in the State, whose salaries were withheld for not completing Teachers Eligibility Test (TET) in the stipulated time, will be heaving a sigh of relief as Tamil Nadu government has decided to give them one last chance to complete TET, which is likely to be held this June.

Accordingly, the School Education Department has orally agreed to disburse the withheld salary for the month of April, after getting assurance from the teachers that they would complete the upcoming TET.

A few days ago, the Tamil Nadu government had withheld the teachers’ salaries as they had not completed TET even after getting seven years of grace time. The affected teachers were recruited in 2011 on the condition that would clear TET within five years from the appointment date.

In accordance with the provisions of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009 (RTE Act), the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), had made TET a mandatory requisite to be eligible for appointment as a teacher in Classes 1 to 8.

Secondary grade teachers, who teach Classes 1 to 5, would have to pass TET Paper-I. Likewise, graduate teachers, who handle Classes 5 to 8, would have to complete TET paper-II, the test will be conducted by Tamil Nadu Teacher’s Recruitment Board, the nodal agency for appointing teachers in TN.

At present, about 1,500 teachers have not cleared the TET paper I, and at the same time, another 1,500 teachers are yet to complete TET paper II and face an uncertain future.

A senior official from the School Education Department told DT Next on Tuesday that following several representations, government has considered teacher’s request to give a final chance to complete TET. “April’s salary, which was withheld, will be disbursed shortly after getting official order from the authorities”, he added.
