About one lakh students are expected to register for various engineering courses available in colleges across Tamil Nadu.

DOTE, which took up the counselling for engineering admissions this year, has launched a portal where candidates can register their application online from May 2.

The government has also established 42 Engineering Admissions Facilitation Centres (TFCs) to help rural applicants and aspirants who do not have access to internet facility. The verification of original certificates of all the applicants will be done at these TFCs.

A booklet containing information about colleges in the State would then be given to the applicants to prepare their choice-list.

Higher Education Department principal secretary Mangat Ram Sharma had said that TFCs would also screen videos demonstrating how to use the Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA) portal -- www.tneaonline.in -- during various stages of counselling.

He also said the TFCs would provide the required support to the applicants, besides extending computer facilities free of cost.

Stating that a merit list will subsequently be published through the TNEA portal, he said a week’s time would be reserved for addressing applicants’ grievances after its publication.

Pointing out that May 31 is the last date for registration online, the official said the applicants would also be grouped based on a merit list, and each group of applicants would be allowed into the counselling system round-wise.

However, counselling for eminent sportspersons, the differently-abled, and those in the vocational and supplementary categories would be held in Chennai.

SEATS & STATS of 2018
  • Of the 1.73 lakh engineering seats made available in 500 colleges, only around 74,000 seats were filled
  • Over 27,000 students didn’t participate in the online counselling
  • Though 72,648 candidates joined colleges, 97,980 seats went vacant
