According to the official sources, collectorate officials received as many as 300 petitions. Tiruchy collector S Sivarasu received a complaint against a person who reportedly charged an exorbitant interest for lending loans.

According to the petition submitted by Nagalakshmi, a resident of Ariyamangalam, her family borrowed Rs 10,000 from her neighbour Jayalakshmi in January.

“Jayalakshmi initially demanded Rs 200 per day. Though we paid her that amount every day, she later said that the money was interest charges and demanded that we pay the entire amount immediately. We were told to pay Rs 19,000,” Nagalakshmi said.

Shocked at Jayalakshmi’s demand, Nagalakshmi approached the collector and asked him to initiate action against Jayalakshmi. Subsequently, Sivarasu directed her to approach the police department for further action.

Grievances redressal meetings were also held at Ariyalur, Karur and Nagapattinam collectorates. Several petitions were submitted in Ariyalur (156), Karur (110) and Nagapattinam (127).

“Though people were not aware about the resumption of the grievance redressal meeting, we received the usual number of petitions,” said an official in Tiruchy collectorate.
