The online registration of applications started on May 2. By the time it ended on May 31, the department received about 1.32 Lakh applications. This year, the department is conducting the counselling process for the students.
Sources from the department told DT Next that they received more than 10,000 applications from districts such as Chennai, Madurai,Salem and Vellore, while there were only about 1,000 and a little over 500 applications respectively from Perambalur and The Nilgiris, the lowest among the districts.
Altogether, there are about 1.5 lakh engineering seats available in government and private colleges in the State. A 10-digit computer-generated number is allotted to all applicants, which would be used when more than one candidate has the same mark. The official said the random number would help if the students have the same marks in Maths, Physics and the fourth optional subject, and have the same date of birth. The higher value in random number would be given preference during counselling.
He said the applicants would then haveto visit TNEA facilitation centres for verification from June 6 to 11.
The official said the government has established 42 such centres across the State where students can seek help regarding admissions, especially during certificate verifications.
The official said the rank list would be announced on June 17 and the counselling would be held from July 3 to 28. As per the schedule, the colleges would open by the second week of August.
