KS Alagiri agrees with critique of Chola society
Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president KS Alagiri has expressed solidarity with director Pa Ranjith on this critique of Chola King Raja Rajan. Admitting that the society was not egalitarian a millennium ago, Alagiri said, “There would have been discrimination by birth. Inscriptions of Chola age only allude to that fact.”

“I do not know if Ranjith has personally criticized Raja Raja Cholan. I don’t know what he spoke about him. If he had levelled personal criticism against Raja Raja Cholan, it is not acceptable,” a cautious Alagiri clarified, admitting that there was discrimination in the society during Chola era, which had a multi-tier society.
“There were slaves during Raja Raja Cholan’s era. Women from upper echelons were high on the social ladder. Women belonging to lower classes were dedicated to temples,” the TNCC chief said, apparently, referring to the devadasi system in vogue during the Chola era. “Ranjith would not have attempted to find fault with Raja Raja Cholan. He might have intended to criticise the society of the Chola era,” Alagiri added, attempting to strike a balance between the director and celebratorsof Chola legacy.
