Puducherry Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi along with a team of Raj Nivas officials and scores of volunteers visited the Velrampet Lake here on Sunday and planted Palm saplings on its banks under the ‘Green Puducherry’ mission.
According to a Raj Nivas statement, they planted over 200 saplings along the lake’s banks. They also saw sprouts of last year’s saplings, which meant that the efforts made by the Forest Department officials and the area community was a success.
“In order to improve the mission’s momentum, gratitude letters titled ‘Pasumai Puducherry’ would be issued to individuals and groups, who plant ten thousand saplings and seeds during this year,” the statement said.
A group under retired Indian Forest Service Officer P Devaraj has been constituted to invigorate the initiative and provide right impetus and direction to interested volunteers and individuals.
“This group along with Team Raj Nivas will certify the identification process,” the statement said, adding that the area MLA, Municipal Commissioners and local community shall be co-opted for the said process on ground.
The first ‘Pasumai Puducherry’ gratitude letter would be given in the next Raj Nivas Open house. A WhatsApp group with volunteers and activists is being formedfor the mission, the statement added.
