16-year-old escapes gangrape bid in Pollachi, nine detained

All the nine were picked up following a complaint from the relatives of a 16-year-old girl. According to the police, the girl, a Class 10 student who was staying with her grandmother, initially developed friendship with a youth in Pollachi, where a similar racket came to light a few months ago. As the friendship reportedly turned into love, the youth allegedly called the girl over to his house on Friday morning.

When the girl arrived at the youth’s house and was engaged in a conversation with him, some of his friends suddenly entered and all of them tried to sexually abuse the girl, the police said. However, the girl managed to escape from the gang and narrated the incident to her relatives, who lodged a complaint with the all-woman police and all the nine were subsequently detained for interrogation, they said.

Hardly five months ago, Pollachi was rocked by the case of a 19-year-old girl being abused by a gang who reportedly took a nude video of her and blackmailed her. The case triggered State-wide outrage and a CBI probe is under way.
