Will complete all works by 2020, says Velumani
Municipal Administration and Water Supply Minister SP Velumani announced in the Assembly on Monday that of the 40 projects taken up for Chennai under the Smart City Mission, works for 20 are under way. But, the Minister added that all the works under the Smart City Project would be c ompleted by 2020.

“Chennai has been selected as one of the first 20 Smart Cities by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. Under this, 40 works were taken up for Chennai of which 22 are in progress which will require Rs 491.86 crore,” Velumani said. He added that a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) named ‘Chennai Smart City Ltd’ was formed by the state government and Greater Chennai Corporation with the contribution of Rs 1,000 crore. “Works under ‘Smart City Project’ will be completed by 2020,” he said.
“Under the Smart City Mission, 40 projects at an estimated cost of Rs 947.35 crore had been approved. As on date, nine projects worth Rs 28.73 crore have been completed. Mobile based grievance redressal system ‘Namma Chennai’ app, establishment of 28 smart classrooms, retrofitting of eight parks, creation of sensory park and traffic park, and formation of vertical gardens in piers of Grade separators in Gopathi Narayana road were completed and were opened to public,” said Velumani.
The Minister added that tenders have been invited for four projects worth Rs 191.9 crore which includes work on projects like constructing a skywalk connecting Mambalam station and T Nagar bus terminus and installation of smart meters in Thyagaraya Nagar.
