According to the police, Nirmala (45), a widow and resident of Chinnakanur village on the Arakkonam-Sholingur highway, earned a living operating a tailor shop and lived with her mother, Padavettammal. On Tuesday night, when the duo was asleep, unknown miscreants entered the house and allegedly attacked Nirmala, injuring her seriously. Padavettammal, who intervened, was also attacked. The miscreants then dropped a mortar pestle on Nirmala’s head, killing her on the spot, and escaped.
Neighbours then informed the Arakkonam town police, who sent Nirmala’s body to the Arakkonam government hospital for post mortem, while Padavettammal was admitted there in a serious condition. As the culprits are believed to have entered the victim’s house by opening the door, the police suspect that they might have been known to them. Further investigations are on.
