Democracy’s 4 pillars functioning freely in State, claims CM

Speaking at the special convocation of Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law University in Chennai, he said as per the Constitution, all the four pillars of democracy – judiciary, executive, legislature and the media – should function freely within their limits. Only then people will lead a happy and peaceful life, he added. ‘’I am happy to say that all these four pillars are functioning independently in the State,” he added. Palaniswami recalled various steps taken by the government for upgrading legal education and opening of new law colleges in the State and said Dr Ambedkar Law University was the first varsity in South Asia offering quality education at a very low cost.

Congratulating three eminent persons, who were honoured with Doctor of Laws by President Ram Nath Kovind, he said this honour was the first of its kind in the annals of legal and judicial history.

‘’Retired Chief Justice of Supreme Court and Kerala Governor P Sathasivam is a son of our soil. His sustained hard work and dedication made him rise to the highest position in the judiciary,” he said.

He has pronounced several path-breaking judgments in his career and notable among them was the 1993 Bombay Blast case, wherein several accused persons were sentenced, winning the praise of people. He has also delivered a judgement for ending theinhuman practice of manual scavenging.

Supreme Court Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde hails from a lawyer family. He delivered a land mark judgment stating that no Indian citizen without an Aadhaar card, could be deprived of basic services and government subsidies.

Madras High Court Chief Justice Tahilramani started her career by enrolling herself as a lawyer in the Bar Council of Maharashtra in 1982. Her deep involvement in cases relating to women prisoners and deserving people, has made her the Chief Justice ofthe Madras HC, the Chief Minister said.
