According to sources, the Srirangam Melur Ayyanar Corporation Middle school was upgraded to a Middle school five years ago and a new building was being constructed to accommodate the students at an estimated cost of one crore rupees at Moolathoppu, which is located more than 4 km away from the current location. Officials had informed that the students from Classes 6 to 10 would be accommodated in the new building. However, citing safety issues, the students refused to move to the new location. Parents also said that there was no proper road facility to the new building location, and stating that they would not send their children to the school, staged a protest on Wednesday.

On information, District Collector S Sivarasu instructed DEO Chinnarasu to organise a peace meeting with the agitating students and their parents. Subsequently, a meeting was organized, but parents remained stubborn not to send their children to the school.

Meanwhile, when students of Classes 6 to 10 came to the school, they were asked to move to the new building at Moolathoppu. Subsequently, the students staged a protest in front of the school demanding not to shift them from the present location. The students also blocked the Melur road in front of their school along with their parents. Traffic was disrupted until noon in the event.
