Poll officials in Vellore were taken aback when an altercation between the crew of a container lorry and a private bus resulted in the revelation that the lorries carried cash meant for the Reserve Bank of India in Chennai.

The incident occurred at the toll plaza at Pallikonda 20 km from Vellore, on the Chennai – Bengaluru Highway. Two container lorries bound for Chennai from Mysuru slowed down near the plaza when a private bus attempting to overtake one lorry grazed and broke the rear view mirror of the lorry.

This resulted in an argument between the lorry and the private bus crew. When the bus conductor used abusive language, he was assaulted by the armed police escort in the lorry.

This lead to bus passengers picking up an argument with the police on behalf of the conductor.

On seeing this, Gudiyatttam all women police inspector Kavitha, who was on poll duty at the spot tried to pacify both sides by stating that she would ask the conductor to pay for the broken rear view mirror.

When an election observer who passed that way stopped on seeing the argument and demanded to know what the lorries were carrying. He was taken aback when the driver told him that they were carrying crores of cash.

The observer immediately informed the constituency returning office and Collector A Shanmugasundaram who rushed to the spot and conducted enquiries with drivers and the escort police in both the vehicles.

They informed the Collector they were the security for the two vehicles carrying cash from the RBI Mysuru branch to the RBI Chennai office. As they provided the necessary documents to prove their claim, the Collector allowed the vehicles to proceed.

When word spread of the two lorries with cash, a crowd gathered at the spot. They were dispersed by the Pallikonda police.
