Ensure Tiruchy taluks benefit by linking of rivers: Farmers
Farmers from here staged a protest in front of the Collectorate prior to the grievance meet on Friday, demanding to ensure the union like Manapparai, Marugapuri and Vaiyyampatti get benefitted by the Cauvery-Gundar-Vaigai linking project and submitted a petition with District Collector S Sivarasu.

The farmers from various associations converged in front of the District Collectorate and raised slogans in support of their demand and said that all these three unions in Tiruchy district have long been waiting for the project which would only ensure water availability for cultivation.
Paddy has been cultivated in at least 40,000 acre land in these areas and they depend only on the seasonal rains. Once the project ensures the coverage of these unions, the farmers would get benefited a lot and continue to take up cultivation, they said.
After the protest, they went by a procession to the Collectorate and submitted a petition with the district collector.
Subsequently, the grievance redressal meet commenced in which the farmers demanded water until the month of May in Uyyankondan river and Kattalaimettu Vaical in the district as the Mettur level is at 102 feet. The water can be utilised for drinking as well as cattle maintenance, they said. The district collector assured to recommend their demand to the state government .
Meanwhile, the collector said that as many as 1.42 lakh farmers from the district have been receiving the financial assistance of Rs 6,000 each under Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana and those who are yet to get benefitted as advised to approach the assistant director (agriculture) of their respective taluks, the collector said.
