“We will operate the buses for the industries to bring their workers struck in various places if they approach us with a permission letter from the industries department. They have to pay the charges for running the bus,” said a senior official of SETC.

“We charge Rs 17,500 for first 100 km and Rs 40 for every additional km. We have two types of buses – seater and sleeper cum seater. In the seater bus, we can carry 20 passengers as per the physical distancing norms while it will be 30 passengers in the sleeper cum seater bus,” he said.

Several companies, including the public sector and private have approached us to operate the buses to bring their workers back.

The Wheels India has asked us to operate buses to various districts, including Madurai and Tirunelveli, while the ONGC wanted to take its workers from Chennai to Vishakapattinam and bring another batch of workers from there, the official said, adding that they have also got a request from companies like Nokia and Rana for buses.

The SETC also operates buses to transport stranded migrant workers at the request of the nodal officers, the official said.
