Tamil Nadu workers stuck in Sangli: Notice to SP

The Madras High Court has ordered notice to the Superintendent of Police, Sangli district, Maharashtra, on a habeas corpus petition, seeking to produce the bodies of one Ganesan and 400 others who have been illegally detained at Kupwad in Maharashtra.

Advocate AP Suryaprakasam submitted that following the nationwide lockdown millions of economically-weak working community from Tamil Nadu and other rural districts of the country are stranded far from their home towns.

Accordingly, 400 guest workers from Tamil Nadu have been illegally detained in Kupwad viilage of Maharashtra’s Sangli district.

Also, citing a report which appeared on May 05, he alleged that the government authorities were demanding Rs 3,500 each to permit workers to return to their villages in Tamil Nadu, he added.

Based on this, he wanted the court to interfere and direct the authorities to rescue the workers.

A division bench comprising Justice N Kirubakaran and Justice R Hemalatha, before whom the plea came, ordered notice to Superintendent of Police, Sangli district, and Director General of Police, Chennai, returnable by May 19.
