“There are around 6 lakh people, who are working in various countries. It looks like around 10 per cent of them want to return to Tamil Nadu because of various reasons. Some may not have a job and some others are students while others could be stranded visitors,” noted a government official.

“So far only a couple of flights arrived in the State from abroad after which the government had decided not to allow international flights barring one each from Myanmar and Mauritius,” a government official working in a department linked to welfare and rehabilitation of non-residents Tamil, said.Mainly, workers, who cannot afford to stay back in a country without a job, are trying to come back home. Officials are also keeping their fingers crossed about the decision on resuming international flights to Tamil Nadu. Stranded Tamils from London, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Gulf countries had been sending SOS to the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in all available platforms and requesting him to evacuate them from abroad.
