Tirupur woman on ‘extortion’ spree via social media held
A 24-year old woman, a resident of Tirupur, has been arrested in Madurai on charges of cheating and forgery.

Sources said that the woman allegedly deceived several youngsters by spending long hours with them on social media.
Acting on several complaints, S Davidson Devasirvatham, Commissioner of Police, Madurai City formed a team under Palanikumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime), Madurai City, to investigate the charges.
The team traced the woman to Veerapandi Pirivu, Alangadu in Tirupur district and nabbed the suspect from her house.
During investigations, the team found out that the woman was active on TikTok, Facebook and other social media platforms under different identities. She used to upload her photoshopped pictures to lure persons from wealthy families who are active on social media. She developed a hobby of chatting frequently with them. After getting their personal contact numbers, she maintained communication through phone and WhatsApp video calls, sources said.
The DCP said 24-year old Ramachandran, a resident of Madurai, who fell victim to the woman, was cheated of Rs 97,000. The woman threatened to upload a video call, which they had earlier on social media platforms, and demanded Rs 5,000.
Finally, Ramachandran lodged a complaint with SS Colony police which led to the arrest of the woman.
