With 560 cases, Tamil Nadu ranks 2nd in most affected police depts

The city police on Tuesday disclosed that the number of coronavirus positive cases within the department has crossed 500.

Till Tuesday, as many as 511 police personnel of the city police had tested positive, which is a jump of 20 cases from Monday’s 491. An officer in the rank of Assistant Commissioner is also among the latest 20 COVID patients.

According to statistics from Indian Police Foundation, the Tamil Nadu police ranks second in the list of police departments with the most number of COVID cases after Maharashtra. While the TN has 560 cases in total, the Maharashtra police department has more than 3,000 personnel who have tested positive.

Sources said that 184 personnel have returned to work after treatment so far. Meanwhile, the number of affected persons in the State police headquarters alone stood at 30 on Tuesday. Some of the residents of Mandaveli police officers’ quarters alleged that family members of those who tested positive are not following quarantine norms and freely roaming around in the quarters.

So far, as many as 57 police personnel have died across the country due to the pandemic and 33 of them are from Maharashtra, showed the data from Indian Police Foundation.
