“Referring to the death of trader J Bennix and his father Jeyaraj in Kovilpatti sub-jail, which created public unrest there, Stalin asked, “If the mysterious deaths, which so far had happened in police custody, have taken place in prison during judicial custody, should the CM holding home portfolio not give appropriate answers for it?”

“Those responsible for the deaths should be punished and justice should be done for the lives snatched. When will solution be found for the incident?” Stalin wondered.

“If police will behave so brutally that two lives would be lost for an altercation, and that too when the country is going through an emergency caused by coronavirus spread, is this an elected democracy or police raj behind the screen?” the Leader of Opposition sought to know.

SHRC seeks report

Taking suo motu cognizance of the custodial death in Kovilpatti, the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has asked the Principal Secretary (Home) to Tamil Nadu Government and ADGP Prisons, Egmore, to submit a detailed report within four weeks.
