Vedarathinam, a familiar face in Vedaranyam who was the then strong man of the DMK was elected as MLA for three terms under the Dravidian major. He was refused a seat during the 2011 elections and so contested as an independent candidate and secured second place. Subsequently, he was removed from the DMK.

In 2016, he joined the BJP and contested in the Assembly elections, but lost in it. After joining the BJP, he was elevated as the state secretary of the party.

However, it is said that he lost prominence in the party and was not given any importance in the party after L Murugan took charge as the state president recently.

Sources said that this had prompted him to quit from BJP and join back the DMK.
