In a recent circular, the utility’s distribution director said the amendment to the regulation 29(12) of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Distribution Code, published on January 29, stipulates that the developers or owners of the building, except industrial service connections, have to earmark space for the establishment of sub-station on their project premises when their total power demand exceeds 5 MVA and the total construction area is of 30,000 sqm and above.

“The area earmarked for the establishment of sub-station should be specifically shown in the plan and furnished to the distribution licensee by the developers or owner at the time of applying for temporary service connection for construction purposes,” it said.

The circular clarified that for the projects for which planning permission or temporary supply obtained before January 29, the land for the sub-station should be allocated if the power demand exceeds 5 MVA alone as per the earlier regulation. It noted that if the developer had obtained permission before January 29, land should not be insisted even if the total construction area of the project exceeds 30,000 sq m but the power demand is less than 5 MVA.

“While assessing the present demand or floor area of the project, the total demand or total floor areas of the project including existing and expansions in the near future may be considered,” it added.
