Talking to DT Next he said “the decision was taken by me after consulting diocesan officers including the secretary and treasurer and the four area chairmen.” Though the state government allowed churches to open, the tough SOP made it impossible to conduct worship. “SOP which included not touching the hymn book without which the congregation cannot sing, not participating in the holy communion and keeping away those above 65 years and below 10 years would be impossible to implement” he said and added “how can I ask the elderly in the church to keep away?”
Nityanandam said the decision was taken keeping in mind the ravaging coronavirus and the safety and the welfare of the laity. A circular to this effect was sent to diocesan churches he said and added that the decision on when to open would be taken after talking to representatives of areas like Vellore, Katpadi, Arani, Tindivanam and other areas as the situation in each area differed.
