The 32-year old woman identified as Tamilselvi, resident of Corporation Colony, Melavasal, in a frustrated rage, doused kerosene on bodies of her two young children Varshika, aged four and Varnika, aged one and a half and set fire before attempting to end her life. The incident happened in her house at around 11 pm on Sunday. Thideer Nagar police personnel inspected the spot and held inquiries. Preliminary findings revealed that Pandi, who sells cow’s milk for livelihood, used to torture his wife Tamilselvi often under the influence of alcohol.
And that is considered the reason for Tamilseveli taking such an extreme step. However, the exact cause is yet to be ascertained, sources said.
Further inquiries revealed that Pandi was away from home when the incident happened and neighbours broke the house door to save the lives of the victims, but in vain.
While Varshika (4) died on the way to the hospital, her sister Varnika succumbed to burns after being admitted to the hospital.
Much to the agony, their mother Tamilselvi suffered almost 95 per cent burns to her body and battled for life throughout the night in the hospital, but she was declared dead at around 7.30 am by the doctor on Monday, sources said.
Based on a complaint lodged by Nondisamy, father of deceased Tamilselvi, Thideer Nagar police have filed a case against Pandi (37) under Section 174 (3) in The Code of Criminal Procedure. Further investigation is underway.
