New cases drop below 2K for first time since June 16

For the first time since June 16, the number of new cases of COVID-19 in Tamil Nadu fell below 2,000 on Friday. The fatalities also dropped to 14, the lowest since June 5. On Friday, the State recorded 1,939 new cases, taking the total number of cases to 7,54,460.

Chennai

The number of new cases in Chennai came down to 512 new cases getting reported on Friday. Coimbatore added 179 new cases and Chengalpattu 145, while the remaining districts reported less than 100 cases.

Of the 14 deaths notified on Friday, five were in Chennai and three in neighbourring Tiruvallur, while Ariyalur, Coimbatore, Cuddalore, The Nilgiris, Thanjavur and Thoothukudi added one each. The toll due to COVID-19 has reached 11,454.

As many as 2,572 people were discharged on Friday, taking the total discharges to 7,25,258. Currently, there are 17,748 active cases in the State. The number of samples tested declined slightly, with 73,486 samples being tested on Friday.
