While some countries like the USA and Canada have already signed a complete ban on microbeads without any loopholes, India has now made a move with the National Green tribunal (NGT) issuing notices to the concerned departments asking for their comments on the use of microbeads in the personal care products according to media reports.

The move was made after a Delhi-based advocate Ashwini Kumar filed a writ seeking total ban on the use of microbeads in cosmetics and other personal care products.

Using the everyday cosmetics like scrubs and toothpastes can be acts of pollution if it has microbeads in it, according to the International campaign against microbeads.

Apparently, 82 NGOs and several other organisations are supporting the cause. However, many brands have promised to remove the pellets from their products.

In short, these non-biodegradable microbeads, hardly visible to the naked eye, flows straight from the drain into the oceans causing a great danger to marine life.

Researches show that micro-plastics in the marine environment is a serious environmental issue although the consequences are hard to quantify.
