Dean of Madurai GRH, Vairamuthuraja, in the press meet, said that the woman had complained of chest pain and had initially approached a private hospital. But after preliminary tests the private hospital referred the woman to GRH considering the complicated nature of her condition.

When tests were performed on her at the GRH, a block was found in the left main coronary artery which is dangerous to her life when compared to blocks in other valves of the heart.

Usually an urgent bypass surgery would be performed in such cases but for the first time in the Government Rajaji Hospital, the block was removed using angioplasty procedure.

A ‘V’ shaped stent was inserted from a blood vessel from her right thigh with a balloon. The balloon was blown slowly and the stent was placed in the left main coronary artery which was weak and blocked. By placing the stent, a small mesh, the block was removed and normal blood flow was restored, the Dean explained.

The method called the ‘V-stenting’ is a simplified technology and the surgery was performed well under 30 minutes. A team of cardiologists headed by Cardiology Department Head, Balasubramanian, performed the meticulously planned surgery with precision.
