What is preeclampsia and what are its symptoms?

—Tanisha P, a resident of Ekkaduthangal

Preeclampsia is a pregnancy complication characterised by high blood pressure and signs of damage to another organ system, most often the liver and kidneys, also includes symptoms such as high blood pressure or hypertension, protein in your urine, swelling of your face, hands and feet, persistent headaches, nausea or vomiting, abdominal and lower back pain and a weight gain of over two-and-a-half kgs a week. It is important to be aware of these changes and reporting these signs to your doctor can be crucial to a healthy pregnancy. While it is not necessary that having symptoms must mean you have PE, but they are cause of concern and require immediate medical evaluation.

My daughter is six-years-old old. What kind of shampoos can I use for her hair?

—Ambika, a resident of Royapettah

A mild, easy lather and non-irritating formula that deeply cleanses hair and scalp is ideal for your little one’s hair and scalp unlike adult shampoos which might be harsher. Adult/family shampoos have pH above 5.5, whereas the pH of the shampoo used for kids should be around 5.5-6. A pH level above 6 may increase the negative electrical charge of hair fibre surface, resulting in friction between the fibres and ultimately leading to cuticle damage and fibre breakage.
