Slice of Life: 'I have a steady life, don’t have any complaints'
Every person has a story to share. This column puts the spotlight on the people of Chennai, faces we see but rarely interact with — giving a glimpse into their struggle.
Chennai
I got my driving licence in 1983. Since then, I have been driving car for a living for almost four decades now. I used to live in Thanjavur with my wife and two children. After losing my wife a few years ago, I moved to Chennai for work. As a single father, my ambition is to work hard and earn enough money to ensure quality education for my children and get them married into respectable families. Due to this, I was able to visit my children only once a month for many years. I would go to Thanjavur when I get day off from work which is on the second and fourth Saturdays.
I have fallen into this routine and have never thought about a change of work. I don’t have any complaints, as I find the job very comforting. I can plan everything and have a steady life. My daughter Ilakiya (24), just got married. My superiors attended the wedding along with their families to bless my daughter. By the time I retire from driving in next 4-5 years, I will ensure I get my son, Praveen Kumar (25), is also married and settled. Only after that will I think of what I want to do in my life besides driving!”
