Citizen Connect: Sathyamoorthy Main Road, cross-country track for motorists
The poor condition of an important road in Perungalathur, which the local residents use to avoid traffic on the congested GST road, has left the motorists here an unhappy lot. While the public alleged that their repeated pleas fell on deaf ears, officials said they would attend to the matter at the earliest.

After one of the railway gates in the locality – LC32 – was closed for flyover work, the local public there were using Sathyamoorthy main road to reach Perungalathur through Mudichur. This helps them avoid the traffic on the GST Road. Taking this road also enabled motorists from Perungalathur and Vandalur to reach their destinations quicker than the regular route.
The residents charged that the one-km long road had not been repaired for many years, which has left the road in a bad shape, causing trouble for the public, especially motorists. Now that more number of vehicles, including heavy vehicles, have been using this stretch after the closure of the railway gate, the condition of the road has only gone from bad to worse, said the local public.
According to one of the local residents, Goutham, the people there had tried contacting the municipality officials several times over the years, requesting them to undertake repair and maintenance work. “But they have so far not shown any interest in repairing the road. Driving two-wheelers on this stretch is particularly troublesome for us,” he said.
Echoing him, R Karthikeyan, a resident of Perungalathur, recalled how the civic body officials failed to respond to their repeated pleas to get the road repaid. After realising that no action was forthcoming, he has now decided not to take Sathyamoorthy road while returning home from office as he used to do. “Now that it has been damaged a lot, I prefer coming through the GST road,” he said.
However, when contacted, the R Suma, the Executive Officer of Perungalathur Municipality said the road would be repaired soon. “We will take all the necessary steps to repair the road soon,” assured the official.
