Citizen Connect: Incomplete roads with slopes along Bharathi Salai act as a menace for motorists

Residents staying in colonies along Bharathi Salai, Ramapuram, claim that incomplete road work has left steep slopes on the sides of the road, which is a menace to two-wheelers and pedestrians on the busy stretch.

“It took us three years to get the Greater Chennai Corporation to understand the problems we are facing with the mud road on Bharathi Salai before they finally laid the main road a month ago. However, since it is not laid properly, there is a steep slope on both sides of the road as it ends abruptly. Two-wheelers can easily slide off the road and can result in causing grievous injuries to the rider. It might also damage nearby shops in the melee,” Arivazhagan (48), a member of Ramapuram Samuga Nalam Federation, said.

The Corporation took three years to complete the work of the underground sewage pipelines on Bharathi Salai before laying the tarmac road. Now, residents are agitated that the road has not been laid properly in spite of the delay.

Selvan (58), a resident at Easwaran Nagar, a colony bordering Bharathi Salai, said, “It is very dangerous to ride a two-wheeler as the chances for an accident is high. If one slips down the slope, the fall will be on the debris accumulated on the side. As SRM Easwari Engineering College is on this stretch, lots of students use the busy stretch and it is difficult for them as there is no designated space for pedestrians.”

“People also park their two-wheelers on the road as they don’t want to take it down the slope. The incomplete road causes chaos for everyone,” he added.

“The funds to fill the slope and laying down the pathway have been sanctioned and another contractor has been roped in. The road’s slope will be ironed out in a few days,” a Corporation official said.
