Citizen Connect: Dustbin on MGR Salai road causes traffic snarls, endangers motorists’ lives

MGR Salai in Nungambakkam is one of the major arterial roads in the city, but motorists now find it inconvenient and dangerous to travel on this road. The reason — a garbage bin that has encroached the road opposite Palmgrove Hotel bus stop — and made the already narrow road narrower.

“As the road connects Valluvarkottam and Anna Salai, traffic snarls occur frequently during peak hours. But the Corporation officials have placed a garbage bin that has almost blocked the road,” S Meganathan, a motorist, said.

When DTNext visited the spot near Somany Ceramics and opposite Palmgrove bus stop, the garbage bin was found on the road, a few feet away from the pedestrian pavement. Usually, the Chennai Corporation officials place the bins on pavements, to ensure the traffic flow is not affected.

Apart from creating traffic snarls, the garbage bin also poses danger to the motorists, who cannot see the dustbin while overtaking.

Meganathan added that as the bin is on the road, Chennai Corporation’s compactor garbage truck blocks the road when garbage is removed from the bin. “The officials should move the garbage bin away from the road,” he states.

Another motorist alleged that the garbage lorries come to clear the bin in the daytime. “As this is a busy road, the officials should streamline the operation of lorries. The lorries should be operated either early in the morning or in the night,” he said.

Many commercial establishments on the road throw their garbage in the bin, and at times, the bin overflows with slush spread around it. “But the civic body clears the bin only in the evenings.”

Meanwhile, Chennai Corporation officials assured that the garbage bin would be moved out of the road, and conservancy workers would be directed not to drag the bin to the road, while clearing it.
