Slice Of Life: ‘I work to help my son meet daily expenses’
Every person has a story to share. This column puts the spotlight on the people of Chennai, faces we see but rarely interact with — giving a glimpse into their struggle.
Chennai
I have been selling flowers on Choolaimedu High Road for nearly 20 years. I go to Koyambedu to procure flowers every day. I studied till Class 5 and dropped out due to lack of interest. I earn Rs 100 per day and on some days, it could be much lesser.
My husband was a construction worker and he died of cardiac arrest 10 years ago. My son was studying Class 8 when my husband died, and he started to work to help me with family expenses. He is now working in a pest control firm.
I could not quit selling flowers and I am working to help my son as he once shared my burden. Even though my son’s salary is enough for paying house rent and to meet other expenses, my small income would help to meet day-to-day expenses. I will work until my body allows me to.
For the past 20 years, Choolaimedu High Road remains the same with the old buildings. However, I have witnessed the proliferation of vehicle movement on the road for the last 15 years.
