The residents of the locality are irked by the piles of garbage dumped at open spaces due to lack of dustbins as it emits foul smell on the stretch.

“There used to be two dustbins at the end of the street and conservancy workers do not come to collect the waste door-to-door. After the dustbins got damaged, residents started dumping the waste on the roadside and in vacant spaces next to it. There is no collection of waste by conservancy staff also,” said K Ravi, a resident of the locality.

Residents said that garbage is scattered all over the place and waste from the old dustbins are also left in the same area. Additionally, tipplers have thrown liquor bottles on the stretch and they are not cleaned by the conservancy workers or collected by ragpickers, residents rued.

“The vacant plot ispartially encroached and the other part of it is completely dumped with waste fromthe locality and even passers-by. We have raised complaints regarding this to the Greater Chennai Corporation but nothing has changed,” said S Rajashekar, a resident of GKM Colony.

The local civic authorities had promised to install new dustbins opposite GKM Colony 15th Street. But it has been more than 10 months and no dustbins have been installed in the locality to this date,” said A Arul, a resident of GKM Colony. When contacted, Corporation officials said that authorities cannot take up the cleaning of the open space where garbage isbeing dumped as it is a private property.

However, new dustbins shall be installed based on the request of residents,” said the official.
