R Kasthuri (70), Cobbler
I have been living on a platform in Vepery for several years and expected the government to provide accommodation. My husband, who was a cobbler, passed away and my only son is a differently abled person. He is also a cobbler and lives in Ennore with his family. I do not want to be a burden on him as he is already struggling to provide for his family. My only companion now is my dog. I sometimes earn up to Rs 100 on a good day. At times, I do not earn anything. My friends, who are working as maids, get food from their employers. But, instead of keeping the food for themselves, they give it to me and my dog. I am, somehow, managing now to live on the platform as there are no rains for several months. I need a roof over my head during the monsoon. At this age, I can not make trips to government offices seeking help. Many officials and persons from media spoke to me and took pictures of me but still there is no help. As my son is struggling without enough money, I would give him money sometimes. As I get food from my friends, I do not need much money, but help from the government.
