Overflowing drainage water troubles road users and reduces business for shopowners
Overflowing manhole and faulty drainage system on Jawaharlal Nehru Road near Ekkatuthangal have been a long-pending woe of the commuters and shopkeepers in the locality.

The water overflowing from the broken manhole not only irks the pedestrians on the route, but the shopkeepers in the vicinity also complain about unhygienic conditions.
“I used to have my flower shop on the main road, but then the drainage water started overflowing and I had to move my shop to another side of the road. It not only makes the area filthy but has caused inconvenience to shopkeepers like us in the locality,” said Amudha, a flower seller in the locality.
The drainage line on the stretch seems to be broken for more than two months and it flows towards the main road and even enters the shops in the area.
“When the overflowing sewage water enters my shop, my business gets affected. The shop becomes dirty and it is even difficult to work,” said Jai Narayan, a tea shop owner on the Jawaharlal Nehru Road.
There is another manhole near Ekktuthangal metro station entrance B, which also overflows often and adds to the overflowing drainage water. The drainage water gets stagnated on the main road and troubles the pedestrians. Residents said that construction works while setting up the footpath in the locality would have led to the damage of the line. Though it got over in January itself, the damage was not looked into.
“We had complained to the Corporation and they said that the manhole has to be opened and mended. However, no one ever came to do so,” said S Raghul, a resident of the locality.
The zonal officers said that they received the complaints last week and as the sewage water was overflowing, the work could not be done. However, the manhole will be repaired soon.
