A Chennai Corporation official said that a ship MV Nancowry had started sailing to the city from Port Blair on May 26. “The administration of the Union Territory rescued stranded persons hailing from Tamil Nadu on various islands of the UT. Their travel has been cleared by the State government,” the official said.

The official added that arrangements have been done to provide shelter and food for them. The civic body has already set up quarantine facilities for returnees -- free and paid.

As on May 25, 2,286 persons, who returned from foreign countries and other states, are staying in the quarantine centres. Excluding the persons with symptoms, the civic body would send the returnees to their original destinations after isolating them for seven days.

“Similarly, returnees from Andaman will also be isolated for seven days,” the official said.
