Dejected by suspension, cop mulls quitting job
Nearly a month after he was assaulted for standing up against the alleged illegal sale of liquor by fellow policemen and then suspended for posting the video of the assault on social media for ‘lowering the image of police department in the eyes of public’, head constable Venkateswara Rao released a video stating that he was thinking of resigning from service.
Chennai
Rao was in news after the incident on May 10 in which he was assaulted by two other policemen, including one from the intelligence wing, apparently for questioning the illegal liquor sale near TP Chatiram police quarters. After the video of the incident went viral on social media, senior officers believed that Rao, attached to Vepery police station, had posted it, which led to his suspension.
After he posted a video saying he was thinking of resigning, senior officials contacted Rao, asking him to not to take emotional decisions. During his 19 years of service, Rao had garnered more than 35 rewards and a CM medal, and had also been an active participant in neighbourhood programmes.
Rao was upset for being punished for questioning an illegal activity. “Nobody bothered to look into my records and good things I have done for the people in my village. I have helped to reclaim a Rs 4 crore worth land encroached in my village, and helped arrest a corrupt official in my municipality,” he said in the video.
The IS head constable was also placed under suspension while the third policeman, an orderly in an officer ‘s house escaped without any departmental action, sources said.
