    Parole extension to 11 convicts cancelled

    Considering the report filed by the Director General of Police and the assurance given for the quarantine arrangements made for re-entry of convicts who were on extended parole, the Madras High Court cancelled the extension of parole granted to 11 convicts.

    They were directed to surrender before the Superintendent of the prisons concerned on or before June 15.

    “The Additional public prosecutor has submitted that there are only 11 convicts on parole and since an assurance has been given by the State that if the prisoners who are on parole are readmitted in the prisons, they will be placed in a separate quarantined quarters to be provided by the State, the grant of parole through the order on March 26 and extension on June 1 may be recalled,” said a division bench comprising Justice Vineet Kothari and Justice R Suresh Kumar.

    Additional public prosecutor R Prathap Kumar had brought to the notice of the court the communication issued by the DGP on June 6 that stated that separate blocks have been earmarked to quarantine the prisoners on their admission in prisons on expiry of leave at all the Central Prisons, Special Prisons for Women and Borstal School in Pudukottai.

    “Hence, if the court recalls the order passed in suo motu writ petition regarding extension of prisoners’ leave granted by the court, they will be placed in quarantine in the earmarked separate blocks of respective prisons after proper screening,” the police chief had said in the report.
