According to a Chennai Corporation official, all the containment zones were removed nearly a week ago. “We’ve removed the barricades from the containment zones and allowed a free flow for the residents,” the official said.

During the peak of the pandemic, the civic body had earmarked more than 1,000 streets as containment zones and restricted movement. Initially, streets were blocked if they report even one case. “As of now, we are barricading the streets with three or more index cases. If any street reports three index cases, we will again convert the street into a containment zone,” the official added.

Meanwhile, the Chennai Corporation had recently stopped blocking the buildings where COVID-19 positive cases were reported. As the strategy received opposition from the residents, the civic body relaxed the norms soon after the government allowed bus transportation and travel without e-passes.

All the 1,187 new cases reported in the city on Saturday were from 710 streets. In total, the city has 39,537 streets. As on Saturday, Chennai had as many as 10,311 cases.
