We need to improve away from home: Rodrigo Ely
Midway through the ongoing La Liga season, Deportivo Alaves (23 points from 20 games) finds itself in the bottom half of the points table. Its form in the league has been patchy recently, with the side collecting just five points (one win, two draws and two losses) from as many matches.
Chennai
Alaves central defender Rodrigo Ely (Brazil) touched upon a few topics, including the team’s latest run of results, during an interaction with DT Next.
Excerpts:
How has the season been going?
We have had our ups and downs. But lately, we have improved and are finding our identity. The team is gradually getting better and we will keep improving.
Alaves has been playing the same way both home and away, but the results have not gone in the side’s favour on the road. Why?
Playing at home is always an advantage because of the support of the fans, who will push you. We have to know how to deal with the tempo of games, both home and away. We have to keep doing what we have been doing at home and find that extra bit which will help us pick points away as well.
You have played under various managers and each one has his own philosophy. How different is new coach Asier Garitano when compared to others?
He is a person that demands a lot from us daily. Among the coaches that we have had, he is one of the most demanding ones during the week. The gaffer wants all of us to be at our best and work to our limits. It always works out in the longer run. We play in a difficult league, in which each and every detail is important.
You have been playing alongside Victor Laguardia at the back for a few seasons now. How well do you complement each other?
I think we do that quite well. We just try to help each other so that we can get as many points as possible for the team. Even off the pitch, we get along well.
While the defence looks settled, there have been some changes upfront. How have the attackers adapted to the league?
The players who have come in have already shown their level at previous clubs. They are incredible players who are now used to giving 100% per cent on the pitch. That is helping us massively.
